I Am God, Mikkel Steen/Michael Hansen

Lead guitar, speak: Michael Hansen
Bass: Morten Hansen

Recorded in the Ole Steen Studio, November 1996–May 1997
2nd song on appearing on It Stinks, length x:xx minutes

I am God is a groovy, guitar-heavy song written almost entirely by Mikkel. The song includes a xx second speaking part that is a “cheesyfied” version of a review of The Beatles’ Let It Be album. In the spoken part reference is made to Vamos Rocano – this being Ole Steen’s stagename at the time. This is also one of the only Cheese songs that open straight on the vocals, without any lengthy, grandiose intro.

Michael: I think this is my favourite song on the album. Anyway, I am very satisfied with the solo I play on this track – I think it is one of my better ones. Also the change from the spoken part – which Mikkel found in some magazine or something and we changed into Cheesish – to the guitar solo is a fine moment in the song. Mikkel's riff that goes through the whole song is a brilliant piece of finger-work - maybe one of the nicest riff''s that came from his fretboard. I think it's one of the only things I can still get up at the middle of the night and play off the top of my head!

Junior: I think we once again prove that a song can be catchy and nuanced, despite the fact that it's built around a single guitar-riff. A good song, eventhough I remember that Emmeth and I grooved together much better on some of the demo-recordings we did - before the actual It Stinks-sessions.

I Am God, lyrics:

I’m the air you breathe, I’m the voice you hear, don’t you know
I’m the clothes you wear, jelly in your hair, don’t you know
I’m the things you say, stuff you buy today, don’t you know
I’m your mother’s pride, I’ll give you a ride, don’t you know

I am in your mind, you think I am kind, do you not
I will rape your dreams, I will tear you up, I am God, I am God

I know what you’re worth, I’ve known since your birth, don’t you know
I’ll show you your place, I’ll stay in your face, you should know

I am in your mind…

You better not stick out, I’ll get you there’s no doubt, don’t you know
‘Cause I am the air you breathe, and that’s the way it is, now you know

I am in your mind…

Long awaited set from a group that has apparently since gone their separate ways.
A great shame because It Stinks proves that The Cheese was on of the most naturally
together bands on the scene. Basically it’s a live album without studio trickery or special effects,
just the four Cheese’s laying out a few new songs, sometimes helped along by Vamos Rocano on Growing Older and
Love Lives Here No More, the remainder is tight and tuneful, with the emphasis on togetherness.

Watch out

I am in your mind…

What a god, I am god...
